Prepare to be shocked.
I don’t know about you but often when I was younger I would read stories of Gods chosen people the Israelites and genuinely think they were operating with the spirit of stupid. God would lead them out famine, disaster, slavery and oppression in ways that as the reader would blow your mind.
They got to see 10 unprecedented plagues come against their Egyptian oppressors. These plagues completely bypassed God’s people even though they were living in the same flipping land! They saw the sea parted as an escape route from their enemies. Water piled up on their left and right allowing them a pass but collapsed on the Egyptians who pursued closely behind them. They were then led to their promised land, (flowing with milk and honey) by a swirling cloud of glory by day and a cloud of fire by night.
YET they whined and winged all the way to their promised land that supernatural bread (manna) wasn’t enough and that they preferred their forced captivity providing slave labour!
A GOD MADE BY HANDS
At their earliest chance they created a golden calf god and worshipped it, saying “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”
They decided God wasn’t enough and that they didn’t like the way he decided to save them. They wanted a different way and so they did just that by creating and worshipping a god that they could design to do as they pleased. Saying ‘ here is our God that led us out of Egypt and who will now go before us’.
That was god’s people then. Silly enough to create a god with their hand and believe it truly was the answer. Are we really any different today? Are we any better at faithfully serving the true God then God’s chosen people of the past?
I wondered!... and then I researched. ‘Do the god’s of the past still exist today?’, What I discovered was shocking!
I’m about to introduce you to the false gods of the bible who were known far and wide then AND who you may recognize today masquerading under different names. Idols who even God’s people including King Solomon (the wisest man alive) choose to worship from time to time.
BAAL AND ASHTORETH
Baal is said to have originated from a human king called Nimrod who was a great grandson of the great flood. He was an incredibly evil man, who in his corruption set up 4 of the most evil cities: Two of which were Nineveh and Babel.
When he died his idolatress and adulteress wife called Queen Ishar (Ashtoreth) set him up as a God after having a child she claimed was a supernaturally conceived ‘ saviour’ and that it was her late husband, Nimrod reborn. Legend has it that later this son was killed by a wild bore, went to hell but was resurrected to life. As for the mother of the savior, she was worshipped as much, if not more than the son. Hmm starting to sound familiar but at the same time incredibly twisted?
Her son was worshipped as the god of spring and she has been known over the years as the queen of heaven, moon goddess, goddess of spring, sexual love, fertility and birth. Now here is the scary part her name originally pronounced was queen Easter! And is now known as Mother Nature.
Christians celebrate Easter as the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection and often will chose to refer to the occasion as resurrection Sunday. Whereas Easter is still often associated with the Easter bunny (sexual love), egg (birth) and spring.
The bible says worship to her looked like orgies under every green tree. It was rampant. In broad daylight and completely unashamed. Worship in the temples involved having anal sex with the men and female servants there.
I know! It is all a bit surprising and incredibly eye opening. Here comes more!
Was closely tied to Baal and Ashtoreth. In that once worship was completed to the first two it often resulted in a lot of unwanted babies, this is where Molech came in.
Molech often looked like a large brass statue with the head of a bull and the body of a man. Worship to Molech involved child sacrifice. The statue would have a hole in his lower parts/ abdomen that contained a fire. Molech would have arms outstretched to hold the baby, which would function as a ramp for the baby to roll into the flames.
The 12th-century Rashi, commenting on Jeremiah 7:31 speaking of the statue stated:
They heated him from his lower parts; and his hands being stretched out, and made hot, they put the child between his hands, and it was burnt; when it vehemently cried out; but the priests beat a drum, that the father might not hear the voice of his son, and his heart might not be moved.
This ‘high place’ of worship was filled with the loud sound of flutes and drums to prevent the parents hearing the child’s cry. Sound familiar? Unwanted babies? Parents being made to not feel guilty?
Baal Ashtoreth and Molech are alive and well today. Baal and Ashtoreth are now known as porn and sexual freedom and molech as women’s right. Its high place of worship is now called Planned Parenthood. Babies are ‘terminated’ inside the womb so that the parents cannot hear the cries of their unborn child who was conceived as a result of their worship to the god of sexual freedom. However rather than music playing, parents are soothed with the sound of advisors, counselors and abortionists reassuring them they are supported and that everything is ok.
People’s of the past would often sacrifice their firstborn as they believed Molech would bestow upon them financial prosperity for their future children.
Worship to Molech also involved ritual prostitution much like Baal and Ashtoreth. And both Baal and Ashtoreth involved human sacrifice much like Molech.
The name of this god means money, wealth and material processions. The King James Version of the bible often stated the word mammon rather than money and riches. For example Matthew 6:19 says ‘you cannot serve both God and mammon.’
Mammon often refers to excess, such as gluttony, greed and worldly longings that tempt people stray from the truth and from generosity.
Mammon’s worship would have been selfish much like the practice of worship to the previous gods and completely insatiable.
Was a god is was almost identical to Molech, worshipped with ‘lustful orgies’, child molestation and prostitution.
The god of sheep, grain and agriculture. Said to also be Nimrods son, (the god of spring). Who was killed by wild bore. Died and was brought to life by a lover.
In those days it was common for households to own their own sheep, cattle and work their own ground to produce crops. This was of course to feed themselves and to sell for their income.
Nowadays we don’t own fields but we do own businesses that produce us our income. So it would appear that business was worshipped as a god. It was a god to be comfortable, well off and to appear to be doing well. Doesn’t sound to far removed.
A GOD OF THE FLESH
This is what the lord God spoke about idols
They sacrificed to demons, which are not God- gods they had not known, gods that recently appeared, gods your fathers did not fear. Deut: 32:17
They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons. Psalm 106:37
Do I mean then that a sacrifice offered to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 1Cor. 10:19,20
ARE WE ANY BETTER?
So the gods of the past that the Israelites were tempted to worship are still very much present today. The people that saw all the glory of God rescue them from Egypt and who worshipped an idol made from their own hands were no more fickle then we can be at times. This is sobering. Especially when we see that in Mark 4:19 it says
“And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.”
Also when we see the reaction the LORD has towards the worship of these idols we see how seriously we must guard our hearts. Not be swayed by a crowd, or to be tempted to redefine right and wrong. Remember choosing another god is to CREATE a god that justifies us following the desires of the flesh. Saying this god will be the answer and he will do it my way.
